The position of adjectives

Adjectives usually appear immediately before a noun.

Examples:

  • A large table.
  • Daniel’s blue book.
  • Her new clothes.
  • The thirsty horse.

These are called attributive adjectives. They tell us about the attributes of something.

Sometimes adjectives are linked to a noun or pronoun by a verb.

Examples:

  • The sky is blue.
  • The girl looked unhappy.
  • She is lonely.

These are called predicative adjectives. The predicate of a sentence is everything that is not the subject.

Occasionally adjective appear immediately after the noun.

Examples:

  • There was nothing new.
  • The people invited to the party.
  • A player chosen for the team.

These are called post-modifier adjectives. They are fairly unusual.
