In the sticks

“In the sticks” means in the countryside, in a remote place, or a long way from anywhere else.

Examples:

  • I used to live in the city but now I enjoy being in the sticks.
  • They live out in the sticks; it will take us all day to get there.

Other idioms with a similar meaning are “in the middle of nowhere”, and “the back of beyond”.

Examples:

  • The village is in the middle of nowhere.
  • There can’t be much to do, living in the middle of nowhere.
  • I would like to visit them, but they live at the back of beyond.
  • When they retired, they moved to the back of beyond.
