Demonstrative pronouns
We use demonstrative pronouns to indicate particular people or things. There are four demonstrative pronouns. This and these usually refer to something near. That and those usually refer to something farther away.
Examples:
• This is my desk.
• These are Michael’s papers.
• That is the post office.
• Those were the best pictures in the exhibition.
Note: When this, these, that and those are used to modify a noun, they are regarded as demonstrative adjectives.
Examples:
• This coat is Amy’s.
• These books are very interesting.
• That concert was boring.
• Those people are waiting for a bus.
