“A lot of” of “lots of”?

  • “A lot of” and “lots of” are interchangeable
  • Both mean “a large number of” or “a large amount of”
  • Both expressions can be used with countable and uncountable nouns
  • Some people say that both expressions are informal. For that reason, it is probably best not to use them in exam situations. More formal expressions include: “a large number of”, “a large amount of”, “many”, “much” and “a great deal of”.
  • Some people say that “lots of” is more informal than “a lot of”.
