Parts of Speech
In English, words are classified according to nine types. These types are called “parts of speech”. The nine parts of speech are:
Nouns
naming words
Examples: Ivan; bird; London; president, car, computer, wind
Verbs
express an action or state of being
Examples: run; speak; breathe; read; feel; is; want; know
Pronouns
take the place of nouns
Examples: I; you; us; ours; something; it; who?
Adjectives:
describe a noun or pronoun
Examples: heavy; sunny; brown; interesting; cold; African
Adverbs
describe verbs, adjectives or other adverbs
Examples: quickly; carefully; soon; noisily;
Prepositions
relate a noun or a pronoun to another word
Examples: after; in; to; under; on; between; with
Conjunctions
connecting words
Examples: and; because; but; however; although
Determiners
introduce nouns
Examples: the; a; this; those; every
Interjections
express emotion
Examples: Hey! Ouch! Wow! Terrific! Really? What?
