Noun gender

Gender has very little place in English language, and no place at all in classifying nouns.

There are some nouns that specifically relate to male people or creatures and some that relate specifically to female. These are a matter of sex rather than gender.

Examples:

  • duke – duchess
  • king – queen
  • man – woman
  • boy – girl
  • drake – duck
  • nephew – niece
  • peacock – peahen

Some specifically female words are now used very rarely or not at all.

Examples:

  • actress
  • authoress
  • heroine
